January 2, 2009 - YMCA creates Brian Mahon Scholarship Fund

It is with deepest sadness that we share with you the news of the senseless killing of Brian Mahon, General Manager at Eldora Ski Resort. What you may not know about Brian is that he and his family are dear friends of the YMCA. Brian loved the Y and really wanted to help kids participate in youth sports and camping programs. He has been on the Board of Directors for the past two years and worked tirelessly on our Membership Committee, CEO Search Committee and for our Strong Kids Campaign. He leaves behind a wife Jill, and two young daughters, Caeli and Jenna.

At his wife's request, in lieu of flowers and gifts, the YMCA has established the Brian Mahon Memorial Fund to be used to provide financial assistance to Boulder County youth for sports and camping programs. There will be an emphasis on benefiting the youth of western Boulder County and Jill will be a part of selecting children to benefit from the funds. In the near future a bronze plaque will be placed at the YMCA honoring Brian and the Eldora Mountain Resort's commitment to youth and our community. This plaque will be a source of pride for Brian's family and a reminder to us all of his dedication to our community. Perhaps by exposing future generations to YMCA core values- caring, honesty, respect and responsibility -through the Brian Mahon Scholarship Fund, we can turn tragedy into an opportunity for our community.
