Volunteers of the Month: The Interns

Jul 5, 2017, 10:20 AM by Y Staff

Summer is special at the Y. Not just because of the throngs of summer campers and the smell of sunscreen and the sounds of giggles that fill the air. It's also because we get a whole bunch of new staff — camp counselors, lifeguards, etc — as well as a group of interns.

Internships are a way for the Y to provide a little education and in-the-field training to young people looking to one day start a career in fitness, nonprofit administration, human resources and so on. Meet this summer's interns:

Meet our standout interns

Mikayla Taggart

Health & Wellness Intern

I chose an internship with the Y because… I wanted to be involved with an organization that had core values that I believed in. It especially resonated with me that the YMCA focuses on all aspects of health while being also involved with the community on a level that went beyond profits and numbers.

What has been your favorite part so far and what are you looking forward to? One of my favorite days I have had working at the YMCA was with the SilverSneakers potluck. We were able to mix and mingle with a group of our members, eat lots of yummy homemade food (cookies!!) and listen to an engaging speaker. They're a great group of people and I enjoy working with them!

What do you hope to walk away with from this experience? More experience as a personal trainer and group exercise instructor by being able to work with people of all different walks of life. I have never been in an internship that encouraged me to learn as much as the Y has, so I'm hoping to have gained such a more well rounded experience in the health and wellness industry. I also moved here from Ohio, so gaining some well earned independence, freedom and lots of new experiences is a great trade!

Do you have any advice for anyone considering becoming an intern in the future? Do your research to find what suits you best. When you're there, make the most of it! Explore other departments besides your own and say "yes" to as many opportunities as you can to grow and develop professionally. Most of all, enjoy the experience!

If you could have any superpower, what would it be and why? Super strength! Can you imagine being able to lift a car off of someone, or actually be able to open a jar of pickles by yourself the first try? I'd love that superpower. Although, I think my workouts would become a little bit more challenging because I'd need to lift objects heavier than the dumbbells we have at the Y to stay challenged.

Maanasa Srinivasan

CU Public Interest Intern

I chose an internship with the Y because… I was interested in helping with the education part of the after-school program. Since I have a STEM background from school and one of my future goals is to be a professor, I thought that working at the Y could provide me with more experience in the education field. Furthermore, I always loved working with and being around kids so I thought it would be a great fit for me!

What has been your favorite part so far and what are you looking forward to? My favorite part is the mornings when I get to talk to and hang out with the kids! Since I've been at Foothill Elementary all summer, I've gotten to know some of the kids pretty well and it's great when I get to hang out and participate in activities with them!

What do you hope to walk away with from this experience? I really hope to gain some leadership experience from this job. Since I worked as an admin, I've had to deal with quite a few sticky situations, and it really has helped me find my voice and be able to communicate confidently with others. I hope that as the summer progresses I'll continue to gain more communication and leadership skills!

Do you have any advice for anyone considering becoming an intern in the future? I highly encourage them to do it! It really provides a short-term look at a "real-world" work environment that may be hard for college-aged students to get otherwise. The advice I have for them is to take advantage of any opportunity placed their way and try to flourish with it. Furthermore, don't be afraid to speak out or ask for something different if you're not enjoying the work you're doing.

If you could have any superpower, what would it be and why? I would want to be able to teleport. This way I could see my friends and family who live all over the world whenever I want to. It would also just make traveling so much more accessible on a college budget!

Stephen Trinh

CU Public Interest Intern

I chose an internship with the Y because… I believed in their mission to provide the community with youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The organization is extremely well known and I saw that is an area with plenty of opportunities.

What has been your favorite part so far and what are you looking forward to? My favorite part so far is working with kids in the morning! Although the 6AM wake up is extremely tiring, getting to the sites and seeing the campers make it worth it!

What do you hope to walk away with from this experience? From this experience with the YMCA, I hope to become a more well-rounded person. I'm highly interested in working with many different departments so that I can gain more skills outside of my comfort zone.

Do you have any advice for anyone considering becoming an intern in the future? My advice would be to try your best everyday. A positive attitude is important even if the day seems rough. It will not go unnoticed.

If you could have any superpower, what would it be and why? My superpower would be shapeshifting (like Mystique from X-Men). I love how adaptable it can be since I could either turn into a bird and fly or a shark to swim!

Leah Keen

Human Resources Intern

I chose an internship with the Y because… I loved the atmosphere as soon as I walked in! Everyone was so smiley and friendly, I knew immediately that I would fit in here.

What has been your favorite part so far and what are you looking forward to? I've loved getting to meet everyone around the office and I look forward to getting to know everyone better as the summer goes on.

What do you hope to walk away with from this experience? I hope to have a solid foundation of HR, an understanding of how the Y runs, and connections that I can use to jumpstart my career.

Do you have any advice for anyone considering becoming an intern in the future? I would tell them to learn as much as you can and not to be afraid to ask about getting involved in different aspects of the Y. Everyone is super nice and willing to let you get involved in what they do.

If you could have any superpower, what would it be and why? I would definitely choose to be able to make donuts appear out of thin air because who wouldn't want that.

Joey Billeter

Sports Intern

I chose an internship at the Y because… working at the YMCA had always been a goal of mine since growing up as a Y kid. Spending hours in the gym and using the facility growing up lead me to want to be a part of the great programs that I was involved in on a different level. This, plus the people that are a part of working at the YMCA made it an environment I wanted to be apart of.

What has been your favorite part so far and what are you looking forward to? My favorite part so far has been just being a part of the youth sports programs. There really isn’t anything like seeing a kid's face once they accomplish something that they never thought they could. I am really looking forward to the Strong Kids Triathlon. From what I heard, it is really an interesting and fun event, and I am looking forward to getting to be a part of it.

What do you hope to walk away with from this experience? I hope so talk away with a lot of great memories and the abilities to complete all the tasks that I am assigned in my field.

Do you have any advice for anyone considering becoming an intern in the future? Working at the YMCA has to be really about the members who you are serving. That is the only way that you are going to be happy working for this organization.

If you could have any superpower, what would it be and why? I think teleportation would be a really cool super power. Being able to teleport everywhere would make traveling really easy.
