How long have you worked for the Y? 1.5 years (Y member for 14 years!)

My job at the Y is: Accounting assistant

I work for the Y because: I know my efforts directly support the mission of the organization in a positive manner. Secondly, I love the people I work with! The organizational culture at the YMCA of Boulder Valley is supportive and team oriented. Great things happen in these types of work environments, as represented in the daily work and accomplishments of our Y. Finally, the work-life balance and wellness initiatives are ones that other organizations cannot compete with. All of these positives make for a perfect work environment in my book.

Pets: I am a dog lover, and I have always had German Shepherds as companions. Those who work closely with me also know that I raise free-range hens and enjoy sharing my fresh eggs!

Hobbies include: Tutoring in my children’s schools (yes, a lot of math!), teaching college level accounting and business and supporting my spouse’s military command keeps me busy.

The most fun part about my job is: Accounting, reconciling, balancing and ensuring all daily Active Net transactions are entered correctly and accurately coded. Understandably, not everyone would find this type of work to be enjoyable, but there is something to be said for organization, correctness and accuracy. Finance is fun!

Favorite restaurant: “Support local, fresh eateries and breweries” is my motto!

Favorite way to relax: As a Lake Tahoe native, I love all water activities including paddle boarding (with my dog), boating and FISHING! Outdoor activities help bring balance to my busy life.

The most meaningful part of my job: Are the members, the children we serve and my fellow employees. It is rewarding to come to a place of employment each day where the members are striving for a better self, where the children are laughing and learning, and where the employees are dedicated to developing effective programs. Also, seeing the generous contributions from area organizations and individual donors bring a smile to my heart each time I record such a payment and hand carry it to the bank. The notes and letters that accompany these donations are heartfelt and often times contain personal, uplifting stories. There are many philanthropic, giving individuals in this locale and this aspect brings meaning to my daily work.

Favorite band: Jazz anyone? My grandpa was a well-known jazz musician, so his group is my favorite band.

Favorite fruit: Palisade peaches and pineapple are two of my favorite fruits. I also enjoy making fruit infused water. Please visit me upstairs at the Arapahoe Y to enjoy the daily flavored water. Cheers!

The biggest lesson I’ve learned while working at the Y is: Accounting is not as predictable and repetitive as one may think. My work in the finance department is consistently evolving to meet the needs of the organization, the mission and the departments we serve.

Favorite holiday: My family enjoys Thanksgiving and Christmas! We host military members who cannot travel home to be with their own families for the holidays.

I would love to travel to: Spain and Australia! As a military spouse we have lived in many exotic places and in numerous coastal towns and cities, but España and Australia are still on my bucket list.
