“I stood amongst hundreds of runners waiting for our wave to start. Alongside me were my two kids. Just 10 weeks ago, I had joined the YMCA’s Bolder Boulder Training Team. My kids had said they’d run the BB10K if I ran also. That meant this middle-aged fella who’d never run over a mile had to somehow conquer 6.2 miles. Seeing a flier at the YMCA, I joined the Y’s running club. Made up of young and old, everyone in this club was so welcoming and super supportive of each other, whether running fast, slow or walking. I was very anxious those early weeks of training about surviving the BB10K, but as the rope went up and our wave headed out on streets of Boulder, I smiled and said, ‘Bring It On.’
I had the biggest blast of my life running with my kids, watching hundreds of supporters reach out to high five them as they passed. As we turned into the stadium, the atmosphere was so electric my kids ran ahead waving in delight.
The Y training team has been fantastic – they’ve given me the most magical memories and so I continue to run.”
